Annual Conference Of Interfaith Power & Light To Focus On Environmental Justice & Human Resilience On Nov. 13

PA Interfaith Power and Light will hold its annual conference on November 13 with a focus on Environmental Justice and Human Resilience at in-person workshops and virtually from 1:00 to 4:15 p.m..

The Conference will include both a virtual keynote and response panel session, along with two, in-person workshops at four locations-- Pittsburgh, Lancaster, Scranton and Philadelphia.

Dr. Joylette Portlock, Executive Director, Sustainable Pittsburgh, will be the Keynote Speaker. 

Genevieve LaMarr LeMee, City of Philadelphia, Office of Sustainability, Senior Advisor on Environmental Justice, and Katie Ruth, Interfaith Partners of the Chesapeake- Lancaster, Outreach Coordinator will join participants to respond to Dr. Portlock’s address in the first hour. 

The second and third hour will be in-person at the workshop locations.  Details will follow.

By Penn State News A Penn State entomologist is asking Pennsylvania deer hunters for help with research on biting flies that are active in the fall, which may be vectors of dangerous disease. Michael Skvarla , associate professor of entomology and biology in the College of Agricultural Sciences, wants to document the locations and prevalence of these “keds” in an effort to determine whether they pose risks to human health.  Research has suggested that the insects, an introduced species of biting fly originally found in Europe, Siberia and northern China, may be carriers of diseases normally associated with ticks. Deer keds frequently are mistaken by hunters as ticks, Skvarla noted. Susquehanna River Basin Commission Has No Exclusion Zones For Water Withdrawals From Any Streams, Including EV Or HQ Streams Subject To Water Quality Antidegradation Rules

When considering natural gas industry or other water withdrawal requests, the Susquehanna River Basin Commission has no exclusion zones for water withdrawals from any streams in the basin, including Exceptional Value and High Quality streams where water quality is protected by antidegradation rules, according to Andrew Gavin, Deputy Executive Director. The SRBC focus is almost entirely on whether a stream’s flow is adversely affected by a proposed withdrawal.  Only in some cases is water quality considered and then only in circumstances where there is a direct connection between less water in the stream and impaired stream quality. SRBC can include more stringent time of year water withdrawal limits in Exceptional Value watersheds if they believe that is necessary, but the Commission relies on state environmental agencies like DEP to regulate water quality issues.  For natural gas industry operations, SRBC starts regulating water withdrawals from the first gallon....
